Titia Ex - The Waiting

Into the Great Wide Open 2010

Into The Great Wide Open is a contemporary music and art festival on Vlieland, a small island off the coast of The Netherlands.

Titia Ex has made a site-specific artwork for the ArtTrail@night: The Waiting

Titia Ex’s work is all about the area of tension that light creates in relation to her audience within a specific environment. Light can not only convey the dynamics of a space, but also the tranquillity. It is a quest to find the rhythm - people in motion, contemplative or en route somewhere else - and how to then give this rhythm a poetic echo. The enigmatic location has inspired Titia Ex to produce The Waiting, a work of light art named after ´The Waiting is the hardest part´, a number by Tom Petty who also wrote Into The Great Wide Open, the festival’s title song. The work comprises forty floating red LED lights that blink randomly.

An earlier work by Titia Ex ‘Koprol’ can be seen amidst the trees along the narrow path of the Art Trail.

Since graduating from the Amsterdam Rijksacademie, Titia Ex has been producing works of art both nationally and internationally. In her work, which can be seen in public spaces, on plazas and in buildings, she enters into a relationship with the local environment. The content of the artwork is then determined by the history of the site, the present use of the space and the users for whom the space is intended. One of her most recent works is Flower from the Universe, which she has exhibited at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, among other places. This flower is interactive; changes in colour and movement create a connection and interchanges with the visitor.http://www.titiaex.nl
